Things To Do Near South Hero Vermont: Discover Amazing Hidden Gems.

So you’ve found your way to the Champlain Island paradise of South Hero, Vermont. I’m sure you’ve come here for the inspiring mountain views, serene lake and to unplug from the everyday craziness of daily life. There is something indescribable about the magical feeling of peacefulness that seems to be in every breath of air here.

Our favorite place to camp with our RV in Vermont is Apple Island RV Resort (you can learn more here). Since we have camped there quite a few times we have found so many favorite spots throughout the Champlain Islands. If you’re looking for a few things to do near South Hero Vermont read on! I think you’ll find some new favorites to come back to year after year.

Hackett’s Orchard

Hackett’s Orchard is a staple for every visit we make to South Hero, Vermont. It is a family owned farm founded in 1967 and gives all the small town, New England charm feels you could ask for. You can stop by for a visit to this orchard and pick up farm fresh seasonal fruit, or apple cider donuts from their stand.

If you’re looking for a great fall activity near South Hero Vermont look no further! In addition to their fresh fruit and shop Hackett’s Orchard offers tours and pick your own apples! Sign up for a tour of their working farm to see the magic that goes on behind the scenes. You can also view their pick your own schedule on their website to see what type of apples are ripe! I can tell you from experience that these fresh apples make absolutely delicious pies.

Kraemer & Kin

Kraemer & Kin is a family owned and operated brewery located in Alburgh, Vermont. While this is about 35 minutes north of South Hero I promise it is worth the drive. Not to mention the drive takes you up through South and North Hero with absolutely incredible water views on both sides.

We made a morning of this visit and indulged in their amazing farm to table Sunday brunch. Kraemer & Kin prides themselves on using the highest quality local ingredients, and you can taste the difference. The poutine literally melts in your mouth. And the BLT while simple, was delectable and something I’ve been dreaming about having again.

This brewery actually sits right on a stunning golf course. My husband did not have a chance to play here but it is on our list for a future visit! The inside of the tap room has an eclectic, “found” feel. With perfectly mis-matched table sets, stained glass room dividers, and ferns everywhere you look it feels like you’ve stepped into a wonderland of sorts.

The outdoor seating area is on a picturesque veranda that overlooks the golf course. Past the fairway you can catch a glimpse of the sparkling water beyond. It truly sets the scene for a relaxing day well spent with great beer.

The Kraemer & Kin crafts their beer with just as much care as their food and decor. Using local ingredients to create unexpected flavors, you have to order a flight to try them all! Some of the most unusual flavors were the Lilac Sour, and Sumac Amber . They also have beer to go, and the cans are works of art.

White’s Beach

One of my favorite things to do near South Hero Vermont is visiting White’s Beach. Situated in the southwest corner of South Hero, White’s Beach is a tucked away treasure. This small stretch of rocky beach provides a serene place to watch the soft lake waves and spend an afternoon.

The beach is dog friendly except for a small area. Although the parking is very limited we usually have no issue pulling up and finding a spot. I’ve found some of the most perfectly soft drift wood here that I’ve used in craft projects around the house. Our go to move is to buy some local cheese and wine from Cheese and Wine Traders and have a picnic dinner on the shore here.

Birdhouse Forest

Right across the street from White’s Beach is something equal parts strange and intriguing. When you first come across the birdhouse forest you think you’re seeing double. What starts off as a birdhouse here and there multiplies to an entire forest of birdhouses. Each is a bright cheerful color that really catches your attention.

Rumor has it that this birdhouse forest was started by a few neighbors. They were looking to resolve a mosquito issue in the swampy area and thought to attract more birds! The attraction grew and grew with more birdhouses as time went on. When you look closely through the trees you can even spot some constructed dinosaurs hiding in the brush!

McKee’s Island Pub

If you’re in the mood to hang out at a classic pub with a home town feel look no further than McKee’s Island Pub near South Hero Vermont. My husband and I stopped here for a quick dinner one night and loved the charm of this Irish pub. It’s the kind of place where the bartenders shout hello to their local regulars as they walk in and make you feel right at home.

We ordered the Fat Italian Stromboli which is a bread stuffed with all things delicious. Meatball, pepperoni, salami and several cheeses, served with marina sauce for dipping. The real star of this dinner was the french onion soup. The flavor was rich and it came with a healthy portion of delicious, gooey cheese. This would be the perfect place to stop for dinner on a rainy night, leaving with a full warm belly.

As we wrap up our exploration of things to do near South Hero Vermont I’m left with a heart full of appreciation for the endless charm and recreational wonders this region has to offer. From savoring the tranquility of the Champlain Islands to indulging in the vibrant local flavors at farmers’ markets, every moment felt like a page turned in a storybook of relaxation and discovery.

Here’s to the winding roads, the breathtaking sunsets, and the countless moments of bliss that make South Hero and its surroundings a timeless escape. If you’re looking for other activities in the area, don’t miss our list of favorites in nearby Burlington, VT. Happy camping!
