Whenever my husband and I are camping in the area we make sure to stop by this farmer’s market. It’s become tradition to grab a few mouth watering stuffed breads for lunch. The local produce is always fresh and enticing. Another favorite is the stand that sells dahlia bundles – they will instantly make you smile! Be sure to schedule some time for this Narragansett favorite on Sundays. The market runs from May – October.

Fisherman’s Memorial is also our favorite place to camp in Rhode Island, but it’s hard to book! Check out our post about this campground to learn why.

Rhode Island Beaches

It’s no secret that one of the best things to do near Narragansett is hit the beaches! Rhode Island is home to many beautiful beaches. It can be hard to choose which to go to.

If you’re looking for a typical beach day – packing for the day, drinks, lunch, books, the works – it is worth driving to Scarborough State Beach. There is plenty of parking and overflow lots here, although it still does fill up sometimes in the heat of summer. I recommend getting here before noon to secure your spot! Scarborough is large, so even when it’s busy you don’t feel like you’re right on top of your neighbor. The sand is smooth and clean, and the sea is wide open for swimming. There is a veranda with a concession stand if you didn’t pack lunch and bathroom.

The other beach we like to visit near Narragansett is Salty Brine State Beach. Salty Brine is located in the Galilee area which is a bustling and active fishing port. The parking is tight here, and the beach is a little smaller but what makes it great is the location. Salty Brine beach in the heart of Galilee is walking distance to a handful of great restaurants and bars. If you’re looking to hit the beach for part of the day then have a casual lunch or dinner, you can’t beat this convenience!

Pro Tip:

If you will be in Rhode Island more than a week it may be worth looking into a Season Pass for parking. This will let you access parking at all Rhode Island beaches, and can be a big cost savings to paying daily. If anybody in your party qualifies for Senior Rates you can get the season parking pass for just $30! Compared to paying $12-$20 per day at the beach that can be a huge cost savings.

Champlin’s Seafood

Whenever we’re camping near Narragansett our first stop for a quick dinner is Champlin’s Seafood. With a legacy spanning over seven decades, this iconic establishment has mastered the art of bringing the ocean’s bounty to the plate. On some summer nights, the line for Champlin’s is wrapped around the counter, down the stairs and onto the street. Don’t worry though, they know how to keep it moving!

We usually choose to sit on their back deck, overlooking the marina. You can watch fishing boats come in with their hauls while enjoying your lunch or dinner. Both the lobster bisque and the clam chowder here are amazing – true New England style of course. You can get fresh oysters, clams, and any type of fried seafood you can imagine. It’s all made fresh and surprisingly affordable! Champlin’s also has a seafood market if you’re looking to take home some fresh fish.

George’s of Galilee

Another amazing restaurant to visit near Narragansett is George’s of Galilee. The nautical charm of George’s extends beyond the menu, with a lively atmosphere, live music, and a bustling outdoor deck. You can savor their meals with the sea breeze as their accompaniment. A visit to George’s of Galilee is not just a dining experience; it’s a journey into the heart of Rhode Island’s maritime.

George’s happens to be right across the street from Champlin’s, but both are worth visiting. George’s offers a wonderful seafood menu, delicious and fresh like Champlin’s. What sets George’s apart is their summer sushi! Specifically for the summer season George’s offers a sushi menu that is absolutely delicious. They have several signature roles that are a generous size and can easily be shared. There is also a take out window (where you can also order the sushi), which is a perfect walkable lunch option from Salty Brine beach!

The Fantastic Umbrella Factory

Next on the list of things to do near Narragansett is the Fantastic Umbrella Factory! Despite the name, I promise they have more to offer than just umbrellas. The Umbrella Factory is a collective of small shops on an old farmstead in Charlestown, Rhode Island. Each shop has it’s own theme and is filled with unique, quirky items. From African artifacts, to candles and crystals, plants, and so much more – you can spend hours taking in all these shops have to offer.

The grounds at the Umbrella Factory are just as interesting at the shops. There are beautiful gardens you can walk through, with sculptures and lawn ornaments scattered throughout. Towards the back of the property there is even a bamboo maze you can walk through!

I can’t forget to tell you about the feathered friends at the Umbrella Factory too. There are chickens of all varieties that freely roam the grounds. One of the stores offers feed if you’d like to try feeding them. The factory is also home to an emu! It runs back and forth in it’s enclosure and is amazing to watch. Don’t get too close! They have a far reach with their beak. Several long haired rabbits round out the menagerie here.

You’re sure to find a gift or two here, even for those hard to shop for folks in your live. Don’t hesitate to pick up something for yourself too, and help to support the local artist community.

Rail Explorers

Next on our list of things to do near Narragansett is Rail Explorers! This unique activity is about a 30 minute drive from Narragansett but well worth it. Rail Explorers utilizes old railroads and their rail bikes to provide an unforgettable experience. Up to four people can ride together on one of their quads as you peddle down the railroad along scenic Narragansett Bay. They offer two ride versions of varying lengths. The activity is physical, but not strenuous! The bikes also have an electric assist system to help keep you coasting as you pedal.

The ride we did took a little over an hour, but the time flew by. The railway took us through areas lined with beautiful mansions, along the water, and even through a scenic golf course. If you’re looking for an active thing to do near Narragansett this is perfect. The Rail Explorer staff are incredibly helpful and friendly, making sure everybody is safe and having a great time. They even offer to take your picture at the most scenic part of the trip. Rail Explorers have other locations as well, and we hope to get to more of them soon!

Newport

While Newport could easily fill an entire article itself, we wanted to highlight it here as a great thing to do near Narragansett. It’s just a short 20 minute drive over the iconic Newport Bridge. Planning a day trip to Newport gets you to see more of Rhode Island, and is a completely different vibe from Narragansett!

While Narragansett is more casual and laid back, Newport is a little more upbeat and trendy. Think upscale dining, yachts, and historic mansions like The Breakers. You can purchase tickets to tour most of the mansions which is definitely a wonder. These were built in the Gilded Age by families like the Vanderbilts and no expense was spared.

Newport’s historic Thames street is lined with dozens of unique shops. Get ready for a long day of walking! Though there are some preppy chains most of the shops are local boutiques with large followings. You can find a mix of preppy style wardrobes to classic kitschy “tourist” merchandise. The Newport area is always busy, but there are many beautiful restaurants you can stop in for a drink with beautiful water views.
